Barony has quietly thrived for nearly a decade, but its latest update is anything but subtle.
The developer, Turning Wheel, has split the Instruments of Destruction update into two phases, with the first rolling out today. The changes are sweeping enough to reshape how players approach magic, dungeon design, and loot.
Magic is getting a complete rework, replacing the old system with three distinct skills: Sorcery, Thaumaturgy, and Mysticism.
Sorcery streamlines direct offensive and defensive spells like fireballs and magic shields into one cohesive skill. Thaumaturgy shifts focus toward buffs, piercing arcane secrets, and combating evil spirits with precision. Mysticism introduces environmental manipulation, letting players alter enemies and terrain for tactical advantage.
Dungeon generation is also evolving, with immediate improvements to treasure rooms, crystal caves, and mystic citadels. Treasure rooms now feature pumphouses, kobold barracks, traps, and puzzle rooms, while citadels expand with larger halls, courtyards, and staterooms.
A broader level design overhaul is promised in the second part of the update, but these early changes already make dungeons feel more dynamic and rewarding.
The update arrives at a time when Barony has seen record player growth, reinforcing its status as a hidden gem in the dungeon-crawler genre.
What’s next? The second phase will introduce even deeper mechanics, ensuring the game’s evolution keeps pace with its expanding player base.
For fans of cooperative dungeon crawling, this is a major step forward.
