Bungie has taken a decisive step with Marathon by implementing mandatory server wipes at the end of each season, erasing player gear, contracts, and faction standing while preserving cosmetics, titles, and codex advancements. This approach deviates from recent trends in live-service games, which often offer optional resets to accommodate player preferences.
The first season, titled Death is the First Step, will run from March to June and introduce a community-driven unlock for the Cryo Archive zone—a high-stakes area filled with puzzles and frozen vaults. Additionally, Ranked mode will launch in late March, featuring exclusive rewards and events that cater to competitive players.
Seasonal Structure and Progression
- Reset Scope: Gear, contract progress, faction standing, and player level reset; cosmetics, titles, codex, and liaison contracts persist.
- Season 1 (March–June): Unlocks Cryo Archive via community effort; introduces Ranked mode with exclusive loot.
- Season 2 (June–August): Adds Night Marsh map, a new weapon system called The Cradle, and additional enemies.
The mandatory nature of these resets is designed to maintain urgency and meaningful loot, but it may alienate players accustomed to optional progression systems. This tradeoff forces Bungie to balance long-term investment against the risk of losing hard-earned advancements every few months.
Design Philosophy
The system mirrors titles like Escape from Tarkov, where resets are a core mechanic, but diverges from recent trends favoring player choice. Whether this approach will resonate with Marathon’s audience remains to be seen, though Bungie’s focus on narrative-driven unlocks suggests a deliberate shift toward shared community goals over individual progression.
Launch is set for March 5, with Season 1 beginning immediately afterward. Pricing and platform details have not been confirmed but are expected to align with Bungie’s existing PC offerings.
