Microsoft has announced a sweeping reorganization of its Gaming division, with Phil Spencer—who has led Xbox since its inception in 2001—stepping down after nearly four decades at the company. Spencer’s departure, effective immediately, caps a career that began as an intern in 1988 and saw him shape the future of gaming at Microsoft. Alongside Spencer, Sarah Bond, the current president of Xbox, is also leaving the company.
The transition places Asha Sharma, Microsoft’s chief for CoreAI products, at the helm as the new CEO of Microsoft Gaming. Sharma’s appointment signals a strategic shift, with Microsoft emphasizing a broader focus on integrating gaming with its AI-driven platforms. Matt Booty, a veteran of major studios including Bethesda and Activision Blizzard, has been named Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, reporting directly to Sharma. Booty’s experience spans collaborations with nearly 40 game studios, positioning him to oversee content strategy and partnerships.
In an internal memo, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella acknowledged Spencer’s pivotal role in transforming Xbox from a niche console brand into a global powerhouse with over 500 million active gamers. Nadella praised Spencer’s leadership during Xbox’s 12-year tenure, highlighting his contributions to both the company’s growth and the evolution of gaming culture. The memo also underscored Microsoft’s commitment to continuity, with Spencer expressing confidence in the new leadership’s ability to preserve Xbox’s legacy while expanding its reach.
The reshuffle occurs as Xbox prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary, a milestone that coincides with broader industry changes. Under Sharma and Booty, the division will prioritize scaling the Xbox ecosystem, which now spans consoles, cloud gaming, and Windows-based platforms. Spencer’s exit, though expected following his announced retirement last year, marks a definitive chapter in Microsoft’s gaming strategy—one that will test the company’s ability to balance innovation with the stability of a brand synonymous with Spencer’s vision.
