Apple is restructuring its top leadership to consolidate legal and policy functions under a single executive, signaling a strategic shift as the company prepares for long-term growth.
Jennifer Newstead, currently chief legal officer at Meta, will join Apple in January 2026 as senior vice president. She will assume the role of general counsel on March 1, 2026, succeeding Kate Adams, who has served as Apple’s general counsel since 2017 and plans to retire late next year.
Newstead’s appointment marks a significant transition for Apple, combining the Legal and Government Affairs teams under one leader. The move reflects the increasing overlap between legal strategy and policy advocacy in today’s tech landscape, where regulatory pressures and international relations play a growing role in business operations. Her background in both corporate law and government affairs—including stints at the U.S. Department of State and as a Supreme Court law clerk—positions her to navigate complex global challenges for the company.
Simultaneously, Lisa Jackson, vice president for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, will retire in late January 2026 after leading efforts that reduced Apple’s greenhouse gas emissions by over 60% since 2015. Her departure signals a shift in how the company structures its environmental and social initiatives, which will now report to Sabih Khan, Apple’s chief operating officer.
Adams, who will oversee Government Affairs until her own retirement late next year, has been described as a key figure in protecting Apple’s right to innovate while advocating for user privacy. Her leadership has spanned high-stakes legal and regulatory issues, including cross-border data policies and intellectual property disputes. Newstead is expected to build on this foundation, leveraging her experience in international affairs to strengthen Apple’s global policy presence.
The restructuring suggests a focus on unifying legal strategy with broader government engagement, particularly as tech companies face heightened scrutiny over privacy, competition, and sustainability. With Newstead at the helm, Apple aims to maintain its reputation for innovation while adapting to evolving regulatory demands.
