Massive multiplayer online games (MMOs) often undergo periodic adjustments to maintain balance, particularly when it comes to stat scaling. For World of Warcraft, this process is known as a 'stat squish,' which aims to keep the game's numbers in check without altering the relative strength of characters or items.
However, the latest pre-patch for the Midnight expansion has introduced an unexpected quirk: several low-level potions and food items now restore zero health, rendering them effectively useless. This issue extends beyond just healing potions, affecting consumables like Wolf Meat and Cactus Apple Surprise as well.
The problem stems from a miscalculation during the stat squish process. Normally, such adjustments preserve proportional relationships between stats to ensure that characters remain balanced. Yet, in this instance, some items have been left with health restoration values of zero or even negative zero, which doesn't impact gameplay but is clearly unintended.
Players who attempt to use these items find that they do nothing—no health is restored, and there's no indication of any effect in the combat log. While this may seem like a minor inconvenience, it presents an awkward scenario for new players who might expect these consumables to provide some benefit, especially during early levels where resources are often scarce.
Developers have not yet addressed this issue publicly, but it's likely that a patch will correct the problem in due course. Until then, players are left with the amusing prospect of drinking potions or consuming food that offers no tangible advantage, though it doesn't disrupt gameplay in any meaningful way.
